Most engines convert chemical energy into mechanical energy, but there are also engines that convert thermal energy or electrical energy into mechanical energy. The term “engine” is often used to refer specifically to an internal combustion engine, which is a type of heat engine that converts the chemical energy in fuel into mechanical energy by combustion.

So spaces with 4 dimensions are quite easy to visualise: we just need four numbers (x1ufffdx4 say) to specify positions within them. The next step up – 5 dimensional space – is slightly harder but still not too difficult; again we just need five numbers (x1ufffdx5 say), although now things start getting more confusing when you try drawing pictures! Even 6 dimensional space isn’t too bad: we’ll need six numbers (x1ufffdx6 say), but now there’s no way you could draw what this looks like without some extra help from computer graphics!
And beyond? Well 7 dimensional space is pretty hard going even for mathematicians; 8 dimensional space starts becoming really rather abstract; and beyond that most people find it completely impossibleto visualise anything at all!
