What is calcium grease?
Calcium grease is a type of grease that is made with calcium soap. It is usually white or pale yellow in color, and has a relatively thick consistency. Calcium grease is commonly used in high-temperature applications, and can withstand temperatures up to 150ufffdC (300ufffdF). It also has good resistance to water and steam.
The benefits of calcium grease
Calcium grease is a type of grease that is made from calcium soap. It is commonly used in automotive and industrial applications because it has several benefits over other types of grease.
One benefit of calcium grease is that it has a higher melting point than other types of greases. This means that it can withstand high temperatures without breaking down or losing its lubricating properties.
Another benefit of calcium grease is that it does not wash off easily. This makes it ideal for use in applications where there is a lot of water or moisture present.
Finally, calcium grease has excellent anti-wear properties. This means that it can help extend the life of bearings and other moving parts by reducing wear and tear.
The drawbacks of calcium grease
1. It can be difficult to formulate, as the precise ratio of calcium to soap needs to be maintained in order for the grease to remain stable.
2. It is not as resistant to water washout as some other types of grease, meaning that it can be easily removed from surfaces by high-pressure washing or rain.
3. calcium greases can also be susceptible to “pounding out” under heavy loads, meaning that they can lose their lubricating properties and actually cause damage to surfaces instead of protecting them.
The best uses for calcium grease
1. Calcium grease is great for lubricating high-temperature bearings. It has a high melting point and does not break down at high temperatures like other greases. This makes it ideal for use in applications where there is a lot of heat, such as in ovens or kilns.
2. Calcium grease is also resistant to water washout. This means that it will not be easily removed from surfaces by water, making it ideal for use in wet environments or in applications where parts are regularly exposed to water (such as in marine settings).
3. Calcium grease has excellent shear stability. This means that it maintains its structure and properties even under heavy loads and extreme conditions. It is this property that makes calcium grease ideal for use in heavy-duty equipment and machinery.
4. Finally, calcium grease has good anti-wear properties. This means that it can help to protect surfaces from wear and tear, extending the life of your equipment
How to make calcium soap grease
Calcium soap greases are made by saponifying (reacting with an alkali) a fatty acid with calcium hydroxide. This creates a soap molecule that has a ‘tail’ of glycerine molecules attached to it, and a ‘head’ of calcium ions. The soap molecules arrange themselves in to microscopic crystals, which are held together by the electrostatic attraction between the positively-charged calcium ions and the negatively-charged glycerine tails.
This type of grease is particularly good at high temperatures and under heavy loads, due to the strong bond between the calcium ions and the glycerine. It is also resistant to water washout, making it ideal for use in wet environments or where there is a risk of contamination by water.
To make your own calcium soap grease, you will need:
– Fatty acids – these can be obtained from animal fats or vegetable oils. Common sources include lard, tallow, coconut oil, palm oil, soybean oil and cottonseed oil.
– Calcium hydroxide – also known as slaked lime or pickling lime. This can be bought from most chemical supply stores.
– Glycerine – available from pharmacies or some health food stores.
– A container in which to mix the ingredients together – this should be made of glass or stainless steel, as other materials may react with the caustic soda used in the process.
– A means of heating the mixture – this could be a Bunsen burner, hot plate or electric stove. Do not use an open flame as there is a risk of explosion when mixing caustic soda with fatty acids.
Directions:
1) Measure out equal amounts of fatty acids and calcium hydroxide (e.g., 1 cup each). Add these to your container along withglycerine (1/4 cup).
2) Place the container on your heat source and stir gently until everything has melted together into a liquid grease (this will take around 30 minutes). Take care not to splash any on yourself as it will cause irritation if it comes into contact with skin.” 3) Once melted, remove from heat and leave to cool and solidify.”
The difference between calcium grease and other types of grease
Calcium grease is a type of grease that is made with calcium soap. This soap is different from other soaps because it has a high melting point, which makes it ideal for high temperature applications. Calcium soap also has good resistance to water and corrosion.
Other types of greases are made with different kinds of soaps, such as lithium complex soap or polyurea soap. Thesesoaps have different properties than calcium soap, so they perform differently in certain applications. For example, lithium complex grease is better for low temperature applications because it has a lower melting point than calcium grease. And polyurea grease performs better in high-temperature applications because it has excellent resistance to water and chemicals.
The most common uses for calcium grease
1. Lithium complex grease formulation:
Lithium complex greases are some of the most versatile and widely used types of grease on the market today. They are formulated with a combination of lithium soap and other thickening agents, which gives them excellent resistance to high temperatures and water washout. This makes them ideal for use in a variety of applications, such as bearings, gears, and joints that are subject to heavy loads or high temperatures.
2. How to make calcium soap grease:
Calcium soap greases are made by combining calcium hydroxide (or another calcium compound) with fats or oils. This chemical reaction produces a soap that can then be used as a lubricant or grease. Calcium soap greases have many benefits over other types of lubricants, including their resistance to water washout and their ability to maintain their structure at high temperatures.
3. Polyurea grease vs calcium sulfonate:
Polyurea greases are synthetic lubricants that contain polyurea chains in their molecules. These chains give the lubricant its unique properties, such as high temperature resistance and extreme pressure resistance. Calcium sulfonate greases are also synthetic lubricants, but they contain sulfur atoms in their molecules instead of polyurea chains. Both types of synthetic grease have their own advantages and disadvantages, so it is important to choose the right one for your application.
4. Calcium sulfonate formula:
Calcium sulfonate greases are made by combining sulfuric acid and calcium oxide (or another calcium compound). This chemical reaction produces a salt that can then be used as a lubricant or grease. Calcium sulfonate greases have many benefits over other types of lubricants, including their resistance to water washout and their ability to maintain their structure at high temperatures
How to store calcium grease
Calcium grease is best stored in a cool, dry place. If it is exposed to heat or moisture, it can become hard and difficult to work with. It’s important to keep the container tightly sealed when not in use, as well.
